WC: Beginner Syllabus

The Beginner Syllabus focuses on the foundation of the Wing Chun system, and is split into four components taught over three rotations. All Beginner students train the same material together, but are expected to perform it at a grade-appropriate level by the end of the rotation.
– Student Grades: 1-4
– T-shirt Colour: White

Rotation 1: January-March. Grading: Wednesday 20th – Monday 25th March
Rotation 2: April-July. Grading: Monday 15th – Saturday 20th July
Summer Holidays: Revision Grading only: Monday 2nd – Saturday 7th September
Rotation 3: September-December. Grading: Monday 2nd – Saturday 7th December (plus 9th-14th for SG4)

1. Form
The first Wing Chun form, Siu Nim Tao, is divided over the four Beginner grades and is a foundational training method that instils crucial principles, techniques, and muscle memory into practitioners.
– The Form component of the Beginner syllabus is grade specific, and so is outside of the rotation system. Check out the Siu Nim Tao course for more details.

2. Contact
The Contact component focuses on developing sensitivity, reflexes, and adaptability through a variety of tactile drills and self defence exercises; what happens once contact is made.
– Rotation 1: Basic Chi Sau. Rotation 2: Grabs. Rotation 3: Contact Punch Defences

3. Broken Range
The Broken Range component focuses on starting out of contact and dealing with different confrontations, kicks and punches (being both reactive and proactive).
– Rotation 1: Punch Defences. Rotation 2: Attacking the Guard. Rotation 3: Kicks

4. Theory
All students need to know what ‘Kung Fu’, ‘Wing Chun Chuan’ and ‘Siu Nim Tao‘ mean. On top of these there are specific concepts, principles and strategies specific to each rotation.

Grade 4 is a Revision Grade where you will demonstrate all the material from the previous three grades to a higher standard. Grade 4 also includes a Pressure Test which takes different aspects from the syllabus and combines them with pad work in an exercise aimed at putting you and your Wing Chun under pressure.

You can find full details of the Beginner syllabus on the Beginner Syllabus Overview, as well as a downloadable PDF version.
