General Updates

1. Upcoming Bank Holidays

Our classes continue as normal throughout all the School Holidays, except for the two weeks we have off at Christmas. However we don’t run classes on Bank Holidays and so there are no classes on the following days this term:

Thursday 2nd June, Friday 3rd June.

If you miss a class due to a Bank Holiday or you are going to be away for Easter you’re always welcome to make up any missed classes by attending an alternative class in the lead up to your holiday or when you return. If you would like to do this please check out the Timetable page on our website and work out which class or classes would be best for you to attend, then Contact Us at so that we can ensure there is space in the class(es) and that our Instructor Team knows you’re coming.

2. Kung Fu Trousers

Historically we have stocked our own brand Cambridge Kung Fu Trousers. However, we have recently been unable to continue stocking our own trousers for a number of reasons. If you would like to purchase a pair of martial arts trousers for your child there are a number of places online that you can buy them from, however we have been recommending the following: Kids SizesAdults Sizes Sizes.

If you purchase a pair and would like a Cambridge Kung Fu badge to add to these trousers just get in touch!

3. New Grassroots Activity Grant

We have been asked by Active Lifestyles to share the details of some new funding available with you:

Cambridge City Council in partnership with the Leys school community fund will be launching a new grassroots grant aid programme on the 1st April.

Low income families can apply for up to £250 per year to enable their child/ren to participate in a sport or physical activity opportunity of their choice, in Cambridge City.

The grant will be open throughout the year and is available for City residents. All details including the application form and eligibility criteria can be found on our website: www.cambridge.gov.uk/grassrootsgrants.

Kids Kung Fu

1. Grading and Celebration Week - Term 2

Each term we run Grading for Little Dragons, Junior Warriors and Snow Leopards. This term’s Grading will be on Monday 13th June through to Saturday 25th June inclusive. Please note the Tiny Tigers do not Grade.

Your child should attend as normal during the Grading Week as Grading takes place within their regular class, whether that be a Zoom class or a Face to Face class. Grading is always optional, if your child hasn’t been attending class regularly, please ensure they feel under no pressure to Grade. However, if they are keen to Grade then FuTube has all the resources they need in order to do some extra practise and preparation at home.

If this is your child’s first Grading their instructor will talk them through what will happen during the classes leading up to Grading. Please bear in mind that if your child decides not to Grade they will get a certificate but they will not get a badge. If you will be away for both your Grading Classes then please get in touch about organising an alternative class to Grade in if you wish to Grade.

The week commencing Monday 27th June will be a Celebration Week for the students where we reward their hard work across the term by presenting their Grading Certificates and playing Kung Fu games.

Face to Face: If your child is in a Face to Face class they will be able to collect their Certificates as part of their normal class during Celebration Week and we will reward their hard work by playing lots of Kung Fu games.

Zoom: If your child is in a Zoom class they will receive a digital Badge and Certificate (and Score Sheet if they Graded) via email during our Celebration Week.

The new term (Term 3) will start straight after Celebration Week from the week commencing 4th July.

2. Moving Up

This year children who are eligible to move up to the next age group will do so from the week commencing Monday 4th July (the first week of Term 3). We call this our “Moving Up” process. Not all children move up each year, so please see below who is eligible to move up this year:

Tiny Tigers who are currently in Year 1 will move up to Little Dragons from the 4th July.
Little Dragons who are currently in Year 3 will move up to Junior Warriors from the 4th July.
Junior Warriors who are currently in Year 6 will move up to our Youth Kung Fu Programme from the 4th July.

On Wednesday 18th May we will start this ‘Moving Up’ process by emailing everyone to say whether, according to our records, we think they are due to move up and, if old enough, asking which class they would like to move into. We will ask everyone to provide a first and a second choice class and respond within one week. If you would like to look at our timetable beforehand to think through which classes you might be interested in please visit our timetable page here.

Unfortunately we can’t take preferences until that email has been sent to make it fair on everyone, although if you have any questions about the process, or the options available to your child (for example if you are trying to plan logistics for siblings), then please don’t hesitate to contact us via contact us beforehand.

3. Kids Walking Up to Class Alone

We just wanted to remind you that although very rare, there are occasions when classes might be cancelled at short notice (for example if our instructors are having to isolate due to COVID). There are also some Bank Holidays coming up where our classes are not on. If you usually drop your child off and allow them to walk up to the class on their own please ensure that you check the class is on before leaving the site and ensure your child would know where to find you if they needed to come back out.

Youth Kung Fu & Youth Escrima

1. Youth Kung Fu: New Term Syllabus

Youth Kung Fu:
We have kicked off a new term with our Beginner Youth Kung Fu students working on Kicks, the Intermediate Youth Kung Fu students working on Close Range Strikes, and the Senior Youth Kung Fu Students working Weapons. As we are still minimising the use of club equipment we would prefer all Senior members (navy t-shirts) to provide their own sticks. You will find many inexpensive sticks online that will be suitable for this term, however we also sell a set of two sticks and carry case for £25 if you would like some from us – please let us know in advance if this is the case and we can bring them along to class for you.

You can access online content via FuTube which helps support your child’s progress in these programmes here.

Youth Escrima Concepts:
This term our Grade 4 students will be working on Part 2 (Form and Applications), and the Intermediate students will be working on Rotation 2: Controls and Takedowns. You can access online content via FuTube which helps support your child’s progress in these programmes here: Beginner Youth Escrima SyllabusIntermediate Youth Escrima Syllabus.

If you need help accessing FuTube just get in touch!

2. Location Change for Saturday classes - 16th April onwards

From Saturday 16th April onwards our Saturday classes will no longer run at Queen Edith’s and instead will run at Queen Emma Primary School. Queen Emma is a sister school to Queen Edith’s and they are located very close together, just a few minutes away from each other. Queen Emma has parking and a nice outdoor area to train in when the weather is good, but it also has a much nicer hall for us to use and so we are looking forward to making the move on Saturday 16th April.

When you get to Queen Emma just enter via the main reception and we will be in the main hall with posters up to help you find us.

For a directions to Queen Emma please visit our map page here.

3. Grading and Celebration Week - Term 2

This term’s Youth Kung Fu Grading will be taking place from Tuesday 14th June through to Saturday 25th June inclusive.
