Fighting on the ground is never a desired outcome of a fight.

We can divide Ground work into 2 categories:
1.Anti-Ground Fighting: We are on the ground and our attacker(s) are not.
2.Ground Fighting/grappling: Our attacker is on the ground with us.

We focus on:
1. Not getting taken to the ground.
2. How to transition to the ground safely if you have/are forced to.
3. Getting up as efficiently and effectively as possible.
4. Evasive movement on the ground.
5. Ferociously striking to vital targets if engaged on the ground.

When on the ground your arms and legs reverse – Legs to strike, arms to manoeuvre (in general).

Elbows need to be kept tight in whenever possible to make it harder for people to use them to control you.

In addition to the specific exercises, ‘free ground work’ or ‘play’ should also be practised to get a feel of working and moving on the ground.

Remember this is not competition fighting, always look to utilise your whole body to exert pressure and aim to have awareness of the whole scenario to avoid secondary attacks from other assailants!

Ground Control Position:
Standing up with you opponent on the floor, using leg pressure to control them while keeping a wider awareness for more attackers.
